LG Electronics Showcases New Xilinx-Enabled Products at Recent
2004 CES
Xilinx low-cost, low-power programmable chips
help LG set new price,
functionality standards for TVs, mobile phones and plasma
displays
SAN JOSE, Calif., February 17, 2004 ¾ At the Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada last month, LG Electronics,
Inc. (Korea Stock Exchange: 6657.KS), showcased innovative new
products that set new price and functionality standards thanks to
low-cost programmable chips from Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX).
Xilinx, the leader in programmable logic devices (PLDs), worked in
close collaboration with LG to help the consumer electronics giant
introduce a broad range of digitally-enabled products that leverage
the price, performance and flexibility benefits of programmable
chips.
Among the product lines that use the price/performance advantages
of Xilinx technology are LG’s new LCD high-definition
television (HDTV), its new plasma display panel (PDP) HDTVs, and
many of its latest mobile phones, including models that integrate
camera functionality.
“The types and breadth of products that LG offers require
the ultimate in flexibility – the number of product
variations for each television or cell phone line is staggering. So
a solution that allows them to quickly customize each new product
model to specific market requirements is critical,” said
Sandeep Vij, vice president of worldwide marketing at Xilinx.
“The volumes for these type of products also require an
economically viable approach, which is why our PLD offerings are so
attractive to a company such as LG Electronics.”
LG product developers pointed to benefits such as the flexibility
Xilinx PLDs offer to integrate complex on-chip systems, the large
number of I/Os to interface many functions, the low-power
capabilities, and the superior price-performance advantages of the
Xilinx devices.
LG is among the world’s market share leaders in televisions,
displays and mobile phones. At CES, LG introduced the world’s
largest plasma display, a 76-inch model, and is now the
world’s largest producer of CDMA cellular handsets.
