Oster Elementary Students Demonstrate High-tech Lessons
Learned
fromXilinx-sponsored Robotics Class
WHEN: Wednesday, May 26 1:30-2:30 p.m.
WHERE: Oster Elementary School Cafeteria
1855 Lencar Way, San Jose
(408) 266-8121
WHAT: Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Oster Elementary
School in San Jose will be racing the robotic dragsters they built
in Oster's Computer Club. As parents, teachers and fellow-students
watch them zip their cars around the cafeteria, emotions will
definitely be soaring. Here's what makes this event so
extraordinary:
- Five years ago, Oster Elementary School had the lowest test
scores in the Union School District in San Jose. The school was
struggling to provide resources for its students.
- Thanks to an education partnership with San Jose-based
semiconductor company Xilinx, Oster was able to secure additional
school funding, programs and volunteers.
- Through Xilinx's "Stock for Students" program, Xilinx employees
have donated stock to Oster School. They have also donated their
time and passion for learning. For example, Oster's Computer Club
is held in the Xilinx-sponsored PC lab and is run by Xilinx
employees.
- Oster is now designated as a high-performing school by the
California Board of Education and recently received the California
Distinguished School Award.
You're invited to join Oster students as they celebrate not only
the completion of their Lego Robotics course run by Xilinx, but
also the school's renewed pride in educational excellence. With
education funding cuts and low test scores in the news, here's the
chance to showcase one school's remarkable turnaround and the
pivotal role of corporate involvement.
